Entering the Belgian job market is a significant challenge, and for some young people from immigrant backgrounds, these obstacles sometimes take the form of blatant discrimination.
The story of Alpha and his mentor Gisèle illustrates the need for human support to face these injustices and find the strength to bounce back.
The shock of discrimination
Having arrived from Guinea with unwavering motivation, 27-year-old Alpha landed a job as a sales representative in a multimedia store. His sales were excellent, and his integration seemed perfect. Yet, after just a few days, his contract was terminated overnight due to his attire being deemed "inappropriate."
I wondered what I had done wrong.
Alpha could have given up. Instead, he decided to turn to DUO for a JOB.
Putting words to the unacceptable
That is how Alpha met Gisèle, his volunteer mentor. The challenge was about much more than just his career; it was a human one: repairing shattered confidence.
The problem isn't you, it's them.
Gisèle became a listening ear. With patience and kindness, she helped him deconstruct his feelings of guilt. She tirelessly reminded him of his worth and his skills.

Resilience that pays off
Supported and re-energized, Alpha refused to let prejudice dictate his future. He redoubled his efforts in his IT job search with a new mindset.
Without her, I wouldn't have succeeded.
Today, it’s a wonderful comeback: Alpha has landed a job in the IT department at the ONEM, where he thrives while serving others. He looks back on his journey since arriving in Belgium with immense pride.

Since 2013, DUO for a JOB has been connecting young people from immigrant backgrounds with experienced volunteer mentors over the age of 50. For six months, they work together toward a concrete goal: sustainable integration into the job market. Job coaching 100% free in Liège, Verviers, Charleroi, and Brussels... and for volunteers, a 4-day training program is provided.
