‍
🤓 The job market in Belgium: an overview
‍
In 2025, the employment rate of people aged 20 to 64 in Belgium was 72.8%, up slightly compared to 2024 (72.3%). The unemployment rate for the 15-64 age group is estimated at 6.2%, up moderately compared to 2024 (5.8%), reflecting increased participation in the labor market. Although these figures remain generally close to the European average, they continue to mask significant regional disparities. The employment rate varies significantly by region, reaching around 77.1% in Flanders, against 67.9% in Wallonia and 64.3% in Brussels. In contrast, the unemployment rate remains higher in Brussels (about 11.7%), compared to Wallonia (8.3%) and in Flanders (4.6%).
The sectors offering the most job opportunities remain largely dominated by services, which still represent more than 80% of total employment, particularly in commerce, health, education and public administration. Industry and construction maintain a more limited weight, around 13% and 6% of wage employment, while agriculture remains marginal (around 1%), with more seasonal activity in spring.
The most dynamic sectors in terms of job creation remain health and social work, education, business services and IT activities. More recently, employment growth is also observed among older workers (55-64 years of age) and in some specialized services, confirming a structural shift in the labour market towards services and skills intensive activities.
